Local Business and Organizations Invited to Help Lead Climate Action Campaign
The Office of Sustainability and the Environment, in partnership with Prompt for the Planet and the LENA Project invite businesses and community organizations to help lead a new initiative called "Promise to the Planet." About Promise to the Planet
Giving Voice to the Earth Through Art
In 2018, University of Iowa student, Shannon Nolan, and her instructor, David Gould, set out to ask young people to creatively reflect on the state of the planet. To put words to their vision, Gould asked first-ever Youth Poet Laureate of the United States of America, Amanda Gorman, to write a prompt for the project.
Amanda's Prompt:
Think of one element and speak in its voice through pictures and words. Think of it as creating an open letter from the planet.
Amanda's prompt gave rise to Prompt for the Planet, which has collected responses from people around the world who have lent their voice to the earth through poetry, art, and creativity. Using art to tell stories from earth’s perspective helps us build empathy, desire, and support for making positive changes for our planet.
From Art to Action
Now hearing Earth’s voice through The Prompt, our next step is to take action to heal and protect our planet. Through Promise to the Planet, we ask individuals, businesses, and other organizations to think of an action they can take to improve our community and the planet, then make a promise to do it. Imagine a world in which every citizen made a promise to take one action to better our planet. Imagine 8 billion acts every single day - 2,920,000,000,000 acts every year. No promise is too big or too small. Together our individual promises will add up to create significant change.
