More Than 21,000 Pounds Collected For Donate Don't Dump
During the University of Iowa's “Donate Don’t Dump” May 13-16, UI students donated 21,158 pounds of clothes, furniture, food, cleaning products, household items to local service agencies, keeping these usable materials out to the landfill.
A total of 486 students donated 1,036 items to Goodwill and Habitat ReStore. This included 290 bags of clothes, 50 couches and futons, and dozens of textbooks, lamps, and more. Donation trucks were located at Mayflower, Burge, and Hillcrest and were staffed by 60 volunteers over the four days of student move-out. Inside dorms, Johnson County Crisis Center volunteers collected food, cleaning, and hygienic products. The Office of Sustainability and UI Housing increased the number of Goodwill trucks and days for donations this year, helping to increase the amount of material diverted from previous years. It was the largest move-out donation effort both in days, volunteers, and donors to-date.
